We are excited today to feature Metaxia Flogeras as Craftsperson of the Week. After winning last week's Enterprise SJ Emerging Entrepreneur Business Pitch Competition, Metaxia once again demonstrated her knack for both business strategy and creative talent. Metaxia is currently doing double duty as Creative Director at Pulse Communications and as CEO at Granola Girls proving her dedication to success. Learn a bit more about Metaxia below: Where were you born? I was born in the old General Hospital in Saint John, NB and I grew up in Rothesay. Can you give us some background on your current position as Creative Director at Pulse Communications? Working as the Creative Director for Pulse Communications is amazing. It is a great company to work for as I have many different roles. Not only am I able to design everyday, which is what I love, but I also have my hand in Project Managing and Sales. I believe learning so much with a company like this is what gave me the skill set to be able to start Granola Girls. How did you get interested in marketing & design? I have always been interested in art. Since I was very young I was into drawing, crafts and anything I could get my hands on that would help me express myself in a unique way. When I started my Bachelor of Applied Arts at NBCCD, I knew I wanted to find that perfect balance between a career that was creative yet professional at the same time. I found that perfect balance in Graphic Design/Marketing. I knew right away! Tell us about your Granola Girls venture. Sounds yummy! What's the scoop? Granola Girls just sort of happened. My mother and I love playing around with different healthy recipes. At first when we came up with the recipe for the All Natural Homemade granola bars, we were sharing them with family and friends. One day on a hike over the long weekend in Thanksgiving, we decided to just go for it. It has just sort of taken on a life of its own and we couldn’t be happier. We really want to invest in the people’s health around us and Saint John is such an amazing and supportive city, that they have welcomed Granola Girls with open arms. Where can we get some Granola Girls products? Right now, you are able to order Granola Girls products right on our website www.granolagirls.ca Being a Creative Director, I see the importance in an online presence and social media so we have really been pushing that. You are also able to find our bars at The Feel Good Store and The Ambiance Spa. Both of these locations are a perfect match since they are also interested in a healthy lifestyle. Granola Girls will also be at the Kingston Farmer’s Market this summer when they open back up. Do you have any formal training? for design? for cooking? I graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Applied Arts as well as a Diploma in Graphic Design from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. I have also been researching some Nutrition courses online that I may be enrolling in very soon. What do you like best about uptown Saint John? I have lived in Saint John my whole life and I wouldn’t change that for the world. Saint John is so unique and it really gives people the support to let them really be themselves. It is small enough to really focus on a community feeling but at the same time it is big enough to let people grow to their potential. It’s just an amazing place with great people. Where is the most interesting place you’ve ever been in the world? Visiting Greece was pretty amazing when I was young and I always said I would love to go back now as an adult. However, about 6 months ago my boyfriend swept me away on a surprise trip to North Conway, New Hampshire where we vacationed at the base of the mountains. It was one of the most beautiful things! Who's playing in your iPod or car stereo? My ipod is a crazy mix of great workout tunes. In my car stereo, you would find a little taste of either Theory of a Deadman or Staind. What do you like to eat for breakfast? I try and live a very Clean Eating lifestyle. I just recently came across the “Eat Clean lifestyle” books by Tosca Reno and it has changed my life. So, for breakfast every morning I have organic oatmeal with wheat germ, ground flax seed and organic honey. I also mix in some chocolate protein powder, walnuts, banana slices and blueberries. It is delicious! Do you have any pets? I do! I have a chocolate lab, Bailey. A yellow lab, Chance. And my little baby kitty who is definitely one of a kind, Bella-Bootsy! Do you have a favorite restaurant uptown? My boyfriend and I absolutely love Thandi’s to go for a nice fancy night out for dinner. However, I’m also a sucker for Churchill’s and their amazing appetizers! Any other Uptown favorites you'd like to share? Happinez is a great little spot to take out of town friends. It is so quaint and the wine is great. Describe yourself in three words. Passionate. Caring. Fun-Loving. Go Check out the article on the Uptown Saint John website This is your new blog post.
